In California, all children are required by law to attend school between the ages of 6 and 18 and must have good attendance records as well. The state defines legally truant as a student who misses school with a combination of the following types of absences without a valid excuse:
three unexcused absences and/or three tardies and/or three absences of more than 30 minutes
You'll need to contact the school office within 24 hours of your child's absence or the absences will be recorded as unexcused.
Attendance Hotline: Call Ms. Liz at (408) 635-2662 or email at esanchez@musd.org Please leave your child's name and room number, and the reason for the absence.
Traveling? Vacations are not considered excused absences, whether the school is notified ahead of time or not. Families can apply for one Independent study per school year, only if the school is notified at least 2 weeks in advance. The absences must be a minimum of 3 school days and no more than 14 (more than 15 days does not qualify). For more information, you can refer to the Parent/Student Handbook on Page 19
If you are traveling/ going out of town, email Ms.Liz at esanchez@musd.org with the following information 2 weeks in advance to determine if you are eligible for an Independent Study agreement.
- Student Name
- Teacher
- Reason for traveling
- Exact Dates

Math Challenge The Randall PTA is sponsoring the Math Challenge again this year. All grade levels are encouraged to participate. Math Challenge is an optional math enrichment opportunity offered at many other schools as well. A total of 15 math challenges will be published throughout the school year (every other week). Students are not expected to answer all the questions. They do not need to work on the problems by themselves - we encourage parents, siblings, and friends to get involved in discussing and solving them
Congrats to the 39 Superstars who participated in the last Math Challenge! Prizes have been provided for the teachers to distribute. The new Math Challenge is now available online at https://www.mathinaction.org/randall.html. The Spanish-translated version is attached here. It is due next Thursday, December 8th.
Christmas Ornaments PTA is donating ornaments for the kids to make again this year to hang on the tree! I put ornaments in all the teacher boxes this morning and will be bringing in more paintbrushes in the next couple of days along with paper tags to put the names and grades on so they can get them back. Tomorrow a few of us parents are going to set up the tree and after it is up feel free to hang it or have the students hang the ornaments they make. We are also trying to add more decorations from the many cultures represented on campus and if you have an idea or would like to add something please let Catrina Knickerbocker know.
Randall GardenA big thank you to everyone that volunteered in the garden this weekend- we made a lot of progress! We planted 11 native flowering plants around the playhouses and 2 hazelnut plants next to the shed. Yes- Hazel helped plant the hazelnut plants :). We made a lot of progress spreading mulch in the berry section (the pile is almost gone again!). The Green Thumb Garden Club took a tour of the garden and made a donation to help support the garden- yay! Thank you! Our next volunteer time is December 3rd, 9 am-noon. We will prepare the planting beds so the kids can plant companion plants under fruit trees in row 3 during science class the week of December 5th. This means we’ll move the mulch in each bed to the side, remove drip irrigation, and dig planting holes for each of the plants. During class, the kids will remove the plant from the pot, backfill, and water. Hope to see you there.
